Gullfaks Field – A Cornerstone of Norway’s Offshore Energy

Norway

Country

Gullfaks is an important oil and gas field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, located in the northern part of the North Sea, approximately 120 km off the coast of Norway. The field was discovered in 1978, and production began on 21 December 1986.

Gullfaks is developed with three integrated concrete‑based platformsGullfaks A, B and C — which combine drilling, processing and accommodation facilities.
The field produces hydrocarbons from multiple geological formations (e.g., Brent Group, Statfjord Group, Cook & Lunde Formations, and Shetland/Lista reservoirs), making its subsurface structure geologically complex and requiring advanced reservoir management.

Gullfaks also serves as an infrastructure hub for nearby satellite fields and subsea tie‑backs, handling production and transport from surrounding fields like Tordis, Vigdis, Snorre, Visund, Visund Sør and Brime.

In recent years, the field became the first in the world to be powered in part by a floating offshore wind farm, Hywind Tampen, which supplies electricity to Gullfaks and nearby Snorre platforms, reducing emissions from offshore operations.

The Gullfaks Field is operated by Equinor ASA (formerly Statoil) and remains one of Norway’s most strategically significant offshore energy assets.

In 2026, YABIMO is providing specialized offshore personnel to support ongoing operations at the Gullfaks Field. The company supplies highly skilled professionals who ensure safe and efficient execution of essential maintenance and engineering tasks on the platforms.

Specifically, YABIMO personnel include:

  • Insulation fitters – responsible for thermal and acoustic insulation on piping, tanks, and equipment
  • Scaffolders – constructing and maintaining scaffolding for access and safe work at height
  • Surface fitters – performing assembly, installation, and maintenance of mechanical components

Project significance:

  • Long‑term, large‑scale oil and gas production contributing to Norway’s energy exports and domestic supply.
  • Complex subsurface geology and integrated platform infrastructure demonstrate advanced offshore engineering and field management.
  • Integration with Hywind Tampen highlights innovation in combining offshore hydrocarbons and renewable power technologies.
